Our First Family Run – The Canine Classic 5K in Boulder

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I am a strong believer that children will be passionate of many of the same things their parents are passionate about. One of my passions is running. As a result, my kids love for me to run and they love to run.

Well, we crossed into a new realm on Sunday. We “ran” our first 5K race together – the Canine Classic. This is a great race put on by MESA in Boulder where runners can have their four-legged companions run along side them. My husband and I agreed before the race started that we would all walk it together. We didn’t want the kids to feel like they weren’t fast enough to keep up with either of us – plus our dog does not always have a passion for running.

The race directors had the runners start first, followed by the walkers in a second wave. We lined up with hundreds of other walkers and their dogs and waited for the race directors to tell us we could start. Suddenly, it was time to “GO!” – the race had begun. The next thing I knew, my three year old took off in a sprint. Moments later, we are hundreds of yards ahead of the rest of the walkers (including my husband and daughter). My son kept up that pace for nearly 1 ½ miles – we even passed some of the runners.

The second half of the race began with a long trek uphill. I think that’s what ended my son’s sprint. From that point on, we walked. Rather slowly at times, but steady just the same. When we spotted the finish line, he took off at a sprint again – setting his own record!

I am so proud of my entire family for completing this race. It was fun and quite a feat! I can’t wait to do it again next year. I’m sure there will be a PR or two in our group :)

Back on the Half Marathon Training Wagon – Again!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

The kids, hubby, and I have been very busy the last few weeks. Busy being sick! As a result, I have taken a few weeks off from running. After all, who can run with a hacking cough and a stuffed nose? Throw sick kids and a sick husband into the mix and, well, we’ve been a mess!

A new week is about to start. I’ve edited my half marathon training schedule and everything starts tomorrow. I’ll be taking this week a little easier. That means I’ll be running a few less miles each day, but hopefully I’ll add an extra day or two of running onto the schedule this week. I’m hoping to run about 20 – 30 minutes Monday thru Thursday. Then, Friday I’ll take off. Then, a longer run on Saturday or Sunday (whichever day has better weather).

My goal is to get the legs and lungs back to how they were a few weeks ago. Then, I’ll start adding on miles for the long, weekend runs starting next weekend. May 16th will be here before I know it and I want to be as ready as I can.

Running Makes an Old Wardrobe New Again

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

I have been running for a few months now. Sometimes I run more often and longer distances than other times, but I try to do something active nearly everyday. I had a great conversation with my doctor about nutrition, so I have been really trying to watch what I eat, as well (but that’s another blog post altogether).

That being said, anyone who walks into my closet will see that I also have a wardrobe full of my “pre-pregnancy” clothes. The clothes I used to wear but haven’t been able to fit into for years. I haven’t been able to part with them because a.) I like them and b.) I keep hoping I’ll be able to fit into them. Well, guess what…today I thought I’d give the ole “pre-pregnancy” clothes a try. THEY FIT!! My running and healthy eating has paid off!!

I feel like I have a brand new wardrobe without spending a penny. Of course, many of my shirts are still short-waisted. I have no idea why having a baby or two made most of my shirts into crop-tops. But – I have pants and skirts now and just in time for Christmas and New Years parties!

Since running and eating healthier, I’ve felt better. Now, I have visual results, as well. I am re-motivated to RUN!!

Time to Get Off the Gravy Train and Hop Back on the Bandwagon

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Thanksgiving was awesome! We had a HUGE turkey and all the side items. Pumpkin pie and whipped cream rounded out the meal. We have been eating leftovers for days.

Our 21 pound bird...

Our 21 pound bird...

Now, the leftovers are almost gone – I can never throw out perfectly good food, just because it has some extra calories. It is time to get off the gravy train and hop back on the bandwagon.

My gravy train is, well, gravy and my bandwagon is running. I must admit that my training has fallen to the wayside the last few days. I can continue to spiral out of control or I can stop the madness now.

I have made my decision – time to spin out of control! Just kidding!! I will stop the madness. Time to eat healthy, drink more water, and run!!! With sick kids, crazy weather, and a holiday based around food in my recent past, I have decided to start over.

Tonight, the last of the turkey will be consumed and I will turn a new holiday leaf – just in time for Christmas and New Years. I’m thinking if I can get back on track now, it will be easier to stay on track in the upcoming month.

Wish me luck!!!

Running in Maui

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

You would think that running in Maui would be a breeze. Although it was breezy, it was not as easy as I thought it would be. I did a 4-mile run from Kihea to Wailea, expecting to have a record breaking time. The thing I did not anticipate was hills. Wailea is absolutely beautiful with tree-lined streets and plenty of hills. My time was not amazing, but at least I had a chance to continue my training for my upcoming 10K race.

The lesson learned: Don’t forget about hills. I really need to work on adding some hill workouts to my weekly routine. Thanks Wailea!!

Training for the 10K Race – The Winter Sun 10K Motivation – Making it Work

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I have been dragging lately. I’ve let sick kids, rainy days, and busy schedules interfere with my training schedule for my next race, a 10K. Consequently, I decided it was time to put my words into action, again.

I just registered for my first 10K race – EVER- and it is in one of my favorite places in the world, Moab, Utah. The Winter Sun 10K has been occurring for years and I am so excited to partake in the fun this year. Most importantly, now that I am officially registered, I hope it will motivate me to stick with my 10K training schedule.

Although I had strategically planned-out my schedule weeks ago, I have fallen behind. I missed a short weekday run here or there, skipped a longer weekend run, and before long, the whole thing fell apart. Now, it is time to make a few tweaks and make it work for me.

For my 10K training schedule, I plan on running at least 30-40 minutes two days every week. I have found that anything more than that just doesn’t happen. I will also do some form of cross-training two days each week. I’d love to start yoga or Pilates and my indoor spinning class again at the local “rec” center. Then, on the weekends, comes the long run.

Since I usually run three miles without a problem during the week, I will increase my mileage on the weekend. This weekend I’ll start with four miles. I’ll do four miles again next weekend. Then, there will be a week where I’ll run five miles. Then, six miles. The weekend before the race, I’ll taper.

Although in an ideal world, I would run five miles for several weeks, and then, have several weeks where I’d run six miles. I’d even love to have time in my 10K training schedule to run seven miles before I begin to taper for two weeks or so. But, who said running had to be set in an ideal world. I’m going to make it work for me.

The bottom line is that I’ve wanted to run the Winter Sun 10K race in Moab for AGES. Now that I’ve officially signed up…let the real training begin! I’ll let you know how it goes!

Motivation to Run

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

After having a very unsatisfactory run the other day, complete with tired muscles and a cramping side, I was not as motivated as I should have been to run today. Sometimes, we all need a little extra kick to get motivated. Luckily, my 3-year old came to my rescue. It all began last night…

As I was getting him ready for bed, I asked him what he wanted to do the next day. He responded that he wanted me to “do my exercising” and he would cheer for me. It definitely put a smile on my face.

I wasn’t sure if he would remember his suggestion by the time today rolled around. He had a busy day of playing outside, putting together puzzles, and even making muffins. Finally, it was time to put his sister down for a nap. It turned out he remembered since his response was, “Then, you can run!”

So, we headed down to my treadmill in the basement. Sure enough, I had my own cheering squad to begin with. Then, my son proceeded to jog around the basement, doing his “exercising” – a mini-me. I actually got a little over 3 miles in before we decided to stretch our muscles and head back upstairs.

The whole event made me feel great for many reasons. First, I got a work-out in mid-day. Second, my son realizes the importance of running for me…he wants his mama to be a runner. Third, he realizes the importance of exercise for him – he said he felt great when we went upstairs, too. Lastly, it was a cute opportunity to bond in a different way – beyond markers, books, the park, and the local swimming pool.
