Running Makes an Old Wardrobe New Again

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

I have been running for a few months now. Sometimes I run more often and longer distances than other times, but I try to do something active nearly everyday. I had a great conversation with my doctor about nutrition, so I have been really trying to watch what I eat, as well (but that’s another blog post altogether).

That being said, anyone who walks into my closet will see that I also have a wardrobe full of my “pre-pregnancy” clothes. The clothes I used to wear but haven’t been able to fit into for years. I haven’t been able to part with them because a.) I like them and b.) I keep hoping I’ll be able to fit into them. Well, guess what…today I thought I’d give the ole “pre-pregnancy” clothes a try. THEY FIT!! My running and healthy eating has paid off!!

I feel like I have a brand new wardrobe without spending a penny. Of course, many of my shirts are still short-waisted. I have no idea why having a baby or two made most of my shirts into crop-tops. But – I have pants and skirts now and just in time for Christmas and New Years parties!

Since running and eating healthier, I’ve felt better. Now, I have visual results, as well. I am re-motivated to RUN!!

Why I Love Colorado – Reason #624

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

While I am packing to visit family and friends in the Midwest, I came up with a brilliant idea. My sister, also a runner, and I need to run a quick 5K race together while I am in town. Great idea – right? Ummmm- there is only one race within a 50 mile radius during the entire time I am visiting. I can’t help to compare that to the lovely Colorado race schedule over the Holiday season. There are numerous ones that are within a short drive.

I guess I just need to run with my sister for running sake. Maybe this summer we’ll have a chance to compete together – let the good times roll!!!

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science: The Little Star that Could

Monday, December 7th, 2009

The weather in Colorado has been crisp lately – to put it mildly. With the temperatures in the teens, I decided to take the kids to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Every time we go for a visit, we find some new treasures.

Although during past visits, we had always spent some time in the Space Odyssey, we had never really focused on it. This time my three-year old, my one-year old, and I really explored it. It is truly a gem at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

We carved landforms out of “Martian” sand and then watched what happened when water cut through our dams. We made our own crater and then viewed a slow-motion video showing how our crater shapes the landscape of a planet. We also spent a bunch of time on the pretend area: flying the rocket ship, contacting mission control, and going on missions to other planets and the moon.

For the first time, I purchased tickets to the Planetarium at the Museum, as well. The show was “The Little Star that Could.” I was a little concerned whether it would hold both my kids’ attention, even though it was geared for 2-5 year olds – but the concern was completely unnecessary. Both of my kids were MESMORIZED by the show.

“The Little Star that Could” was entertaining and informative. Neither of my kids made a peep during the entire 23 minute show. Afterwards, my son explained that Jupiter is his new favorite planet. He was also talking about the “angry” blue-white star!

Anytime children show an interest in the earth and planetary science, it is a great thing! I applaud the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for getting the younger children interested, as well. We cannot wait to go back and “show daddy” our new favorite show: “The Little Star that Could!”  I highly recommend it to any one with young children.

Colorado Colfax Marathon – My First Half Marathon

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

So I officially did it! I signed up for my very first HALF MARATHON – the Colorado Colfax Marathon. Race day is May 16th, 2010…so far away, yet so soon. So, let the training begin.

I found a great novice training schedule through Jeff Galloway. Although I’ll need to tweak it somewhat so that it fits my hectic schedule, I like it because it is a lengthy program - from start to race day is 17 weeks. Some training programs I’ve seen are a bit more strenuous and have the mileage increase over a quicker time period, but this one is perfect for me. I need GRADUAL mileage increases.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to finish the half marathon; however, I do have a few other goals that I’d like to work on, as well. I’d like to run a 5K at a faster pace. I’d also like to run a few other 10K races. I think all can be done while I train for my first half marathon.

Avenue of Cold Facts – a/k/a Colfax – here I come!

Frosty Flatirons in Colorado

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

After completing my morning errands, I had to stop and admire the beautiful view of the moon over the Flatirons. The moon appeared larger than usual and the way it framed the foothills made it photo-worthy. I just love days like this.

Moon over frosty Flatirons.

The temperature was chilly – to say the least – this morning. At 5 degrees above zero, hats and gloves were certainly necessary. By this afternoon, the sun was trying to peak out of the clouds and the temperature had jumped dramatically – to a balmy 15 degrees.
