Training for the 10K Race – The Winter Sun 10K Motivation – Making it Work

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I have been dragging lately. I’ve let sick kids, rainy days, and busy schedules interfere with my training schedule for my next race, a 10K. Consequently, I decided it was time to put my words into action, again.

I just registered for my first 10K race – EVER- and it is in one of my favorite places in the world, Moab, Utah. The Winter Sun 10K has been occurring for years and I am so excited to partake in the fun this year. Most importantly, now that I am officially registered, I hope it will motivate me to stick with my 10K training schedule.

Although I had strategically planned-out my schedule weeks ago, I have fallen behind. I missed a short weekday run here or there, skipped a longer weekend run, and before long, the whole thing fell apart. Now, it is time to make a few tweaks and make it work for me.

For my 10K training schedule, I plan on running at least 30-40 minutes two days every week. I have found that anything more than that just doesn’t happen. I will also do some form of cross-training two days each week. I’d love to start yoga or Pilates and my indoor spinning class again at the local “rec” center. Then, on the weekends, comes the long run.

Since I usually run three miles without a problem during the week, I will increase my mileage on the weekend. This weekend I’ll start with four miles. I’ll do four miles again next weekend. Then, there will be a week where I’ll run five miles. Then, six miles. The weekend before the race, I’ll taper.

Although in an ideal world, I would run five miles for several weeks, and then, have several weeks where I’d run six miles. I’d even love to have time in my 10K training schedule to run seven miles before I begin to taper for two weeks or so. But, who said running had to be set in an ideal world. I’m going to make it work for me.

The bottom line is that I’ve wanted to run the Winter Sun 10K race in Moab for AGES. Now that I’ve officially signed up…let the real training begin! I’ll let you know how it goes!

Running Inspiration - Grand Teton Races

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

I know I’ve mentioned that I want to train for a 10K Race. The problem is…I haven’t started…yet. I’ve been consistently running shorter distances, like 2-mile and 3-mile runs. I only wish I would have increased started my training sooner.

Why sooner? Well, I recently came across an amazing set of trail running races in Jackson Hole at the Grand Tetons, Wyoming. They are held over Labor Day weekend. Although there is a 10K race, there is also a Marathon, a 50-mile course, and a 100-mile course. So really, the 10K race is the “fun run” – how’s that for motivation!

I know there is no way that I can be ready for a 10K trail running race in Jackson Hole in time for Labor Day. I should have started weeks ago – but what is done is done. Plus, not only would I have had to increase my mileage, but I’d also have to dust off my older than old trail running shoes. There’s always next year and the Grand Teton Races will be my inspiration.

On a side note, if anyone is planning to run the Grand Teton Races, let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear the details and a little extra motivation is always nice. But for now, it’s time to set up my training schedule for my 10K race in the Fall.

The Next Thing: A 10K Race

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

With a 5K under my belt, I have decided to start training for a 10K race. I’m not sure which one I will do yet; but, I’m excited to jump into the training process. In the meantime, I must admit that I am addicted to running races. I actually want to run a few more 5K races this summer.

I love the fact that the Allenspark 5K race has a fun story behind the race. It was designed to raise money for the town’s community center. An art gallery in town was put up for sale; however, a porn shop was attempting to purchase the property. Consequently, the town stepped in and voila a new community center was born. They offer art classes and yoga classes, among other fun activities. I’d love to find an equally great story behind the next race I run.

Anyhow, back to the task on hand…training for a 10K and finding a great race to run. Keep posted!
