Our First Family Run – The Canine Classic 5K in Boulder

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I am a strong believer that children will be passionate of many of the same things their parents are passionate about. One of my passions is running. As a result, my kids love for me to run and they love to run.

Well, we crossed into a new realm on Sunday. We “ran” our first 5K race together – the Canine Classic. This is a great race put on by MESA in Boulder where runners can have their four-legged companions run along side them. My husband and I agreed before the race started that we would all walk it together. We didn’t want the kids to feel like they weren’t fast enough to keep up with either of us – plus our dog does not always have a passion for running.

The race directors had the runners start first, followed by the walkers in a second wave. We lined up with hundreds of other walkers and their dogs and waited for the race directors to tell us we could start. Suddenly, it was time to “GO!” – the race had begun. The next thing I knew, my three year old took off in a sprint. Moments later, we are hundreds of yards ahead of the rest of the walkers (including my husband and daughter). My son kept up that pace for nearly 1 ½ miles – we even passed some of the runners.

The second half of the race began with a long trek uphill. I think that’s what ended my son’s sprint. From that point on, we walked. Rather slowly at times, but steady just the same. When we spotted the finish line, he took off at a sprint again – setting his own record!

Crossing the finish line, while racing after my 3 year old!

I am so proud of my entire family for completing this race. It was fun and quite a feat! I can’t wait to do it again next year. I’m sure there will be a PR or two in our group :)

Why I Love Colorado – Reason #624

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

While I am packing to visit family and friends in the Midwest, I came up with a brilliant idea. My sister, also a runner, and I need to run a quick 5K race together while I am in town. Great idea – right? Ummmm- there is only one race within a 50 mile radius during the entire time I am visiting. I can’t help to compare that to the lovely Colorado race schedule over the Holiday season. There are numerous ones that are within a short drive.

I guess I just need to run with my sister for running sake. Maybe this summer we’ll have a chance to compete together – let the good times roll!!!

One More Goal - Thanks to One Man during One Race

Friday, October 16th, 2009

In September, I signed up for a 3.75 mile race in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The morning of the race, I warmed up and waited for the race to begin. As always, I used my post-warm-up time to do some people-watching. Many people looked to be in great shape – for them the race would be no problem. Others looked a bit out-of-shape. I fell somewhere in-between.

Let the Race Begin - Beautiful Day in the Colorado Mountains!

Let the Race Begin - Beautiful Day in the Colorado Mountains!

Once the race began, I quickly fell into my running rhythm. Finding my rhythm allows me to focus on my pace and my breathing, the rest of the world always seems to disappear - usually. But, this race, it was different…my focus was often diverted to the burping man behind me.

I first noticed him when I was warming up. He looked like, well, the fisherman from the Gorton’s™ fish sticks commercials: weathered skin, crazy white hair, and an unkempt beard. Surely, there would be no competition there, right?

During the race I always knew he was behind me because he was burping loudly every several feet. But somehow, I could never increase my pace enough to break-away. In fact, a few times, this old sailor passed me as we leap-frogged along the course.

About half-way through the race, I had my opportunity to rid myself of the burping, old man. He had dropped back a bit and was about five people behind me when he fell. He rolled down a hill. The group of runners closest to him stopped to see if he was alright. (I like to tell myself that I would have done the same thing if I were within range.)

Then, the most amazing thing happened moments later. He caught up with me again. This time he was burping and dripping with blood from his roll down the hill. He must have fallen, rolled down the embankment, jumped up, and then, sprinted to make up for lost time. I’m sure it was quite a sight to see for the runners that were behind him.

Well, needless to say, he finished a few people and only a few seconds behind me. When the race results came out, I had to figure out who this relentless athlete was. The answer inspired me, adding one more thing to my list of lifetime goals. Apparently, he is one of only a few hundred people in the world who have run marathons on each of the Seven Continents.

I immediately had to check: was there really a marathon on Antarctica? Sure enough, there is a marathon on Antarctica and one at the North Pole, too. I now have those races on my list of things I want to do during my lifetime. I only hope that I can be as fast, adventuresome, and resilient when I am older as my greatest competitor – the burping man. Also, the old cliché is true – you can’t judge a book by its cover (or a running-version of the Gorton’s™ fisherman by his burps).

Aflac Iron Girl 5K Race – WOW!

Monday, August 10th, 2009

On Saturday I ran the Aflac Iron Girl 5K Race in Denver. It was awesome! It was so inspirational to be running with nearly 1,300 other women of all ages. I would love to travel and run in the Iron Girl 5K races in other cities, too - it was that great of an event.

Held at Denver City Park, the course was flat, except for one minor hill. Unfortunately, I went full speed ahead down that hill and then had to walk for a few minutes afterwards. If I had only listened to my own advice and took it easy the whole way I think my time would have been even better by several minutes.

That being said, I was really happy with my time – 32:37. I placed 335 overall. Not too shabby. Much better than the 5K race I completed a few weeks ago – YEAH!! I guess my training has paid off. (Plus, the fact that there were hardly any hills and the elevation was actually slightly lower than it is where I live).

I have to admit the things that gave away were great too. A fitted running shirt, astuffed duck, and a finisher’s medal were among my favorite items. Throw in a few Luna® bars, natural potato chips, and energy drinks and my bag was full. I will definitely be competing in this race again next year!

The Next 5K: Aflac Iron Girl Denver 5K

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

I’ve signed up for my next 5K race – the Aflac Iron Girl Denver 5K. It’s this Saturday and I’m already excited, even though its only Monday. My only concern is the little plush, stuffed duck that I get as a registration gift…one duck and two young kids…hmmmm. I guess it will become yet another lesson in sharing.

I went for a run this afternoon after taking a few days off…and it was tough. My muscles were tight and I ran out of steam sooner than usual. Hopefully by the time the Aflac Iron Girl Denver 5K rolls around, I’ll be ready to go!

The Next Thing: A 10K Race

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

With a 5K under my belt, I have decided to start training for a 10K race. I’m not sure which one I will do yet; but, I’m excited to jump into the training process. In the meantime, I must admit that I am addicted to running races. I actually want to run a few more 5K races this summer.

I love the fact that the Allenspark 5K race has a fun story behind the race. It was designed to raise money for the town’s community center. An art gallery in town was put up for sale; however, a porn shop was attempting to purchase the property. Consequently, the town stepped in and voila a new community center was born. They offer art classes and yoga classes, among other fun activities. I’d love to find an equally great story behind the next race I run.

Anyhow, back to the task on hand…training for a 10K and finding a great race to run. Keep posted!

3.1 miles long and 1.6 miles high - the Allenspark Run Like the Wind 5k

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

So this weekend I did it!  I ran my first 5k in several years.  I finished the Allenspark Run Like the Wind 5k

It was a beautiful day complete with an alpenhorn player.  This was my first 5K race in several years and I couldn’t wait for the horn to blow and the race to begin.

The elevation was around 8,500 feet and the course was quite hilly.  Although the altitude didn’t bother me too badly, I wasn’t as prepared for the hills as I would have liked.  Consequently, I placed 15 out of 26 in my age group.  On a positive note, now I have a new goal…practice running on hills.

As I came down the final hill, I experienced something I had not experienced before while running a race.  My family was cheering for me (the last time I ran, was pre-kid).  A “Go Mama go!” and a “Yeah Mama!” was all I needed to hear to finish strong and with a big smile on my face.

It was a fun race and I now have a time to beat for next year: 39:29.  Just running this one 5K race has motivated me to keep running.  I think I’ll train for a 10K now!

My First 5K Race: Allenspark Run Like the Wind

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I am officially registered for my first 5K race - the Allenspark Run Like the Wind 5K/10K. I am so excited and can’t wait for race day to arrive. Unlike my past races of years gone by, I now have my own cheering section that is comprised of my husband and kids. My goal is to take it slow and steady - which can be hard with the race day adrenaline. Now, to make my pre-race plan…I’ll keep everyone posted!

Running My First 5K Race – Again

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I have decided that it is time to run my first 5K race…again. I have run several 5K races in the past, but they were years ago. I found one for this upcoming weekend. I have yet to actually sign up for it, but I must admit I am very excited. Years ago, when I was running after work on a daily basis, I used to run 3.1 miles in about 28 minutes; however, when I started racing the adrenaline kicked in. I would typically knock about 5 minutes off of my time during the course of a 5K race. It will be interesting to see how things go. Slow and steady is my goal, but most importantly, I am bursting with excitement to be back in the groove again.   And of course, running a 5K race is all part of my long-term goal of running a marathon.
