Catching Up

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

The last few months have been fun, but very busy. Now…I have some catching up to do to bring my blog up to speed. After all, what can be worse than a lagging blog?

The next few blog posts will hopefully bring things up to speed. In a nut shell, I ran my first half-marathon, travelled Europe with my two kids for three weeks, and signed myself up for a slew of new races. Add to the mix a renewed passion for green living – thanks to a week in the Swiss Alps. Suddenly, a busy day has become a whole lot busier.

Anyhow, stay tuned – because I’ve got some catching up to do!

And I’m On My Way - 13.1 Here I Come!!

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I spent last week getting my running legs back again. It felt GREAT! We were visiting family and friends away from home, but I quickly found a short little loop that I fell in love. Every three times I ran the loop, it equaled one mile. The cool thing about that loop was that it had a large hill on the second half. To run three miles, I had to run the loop nine times – that meant NINE HUGE hills over a three mile period!!

After running that route a few times, I was ready for a longer, less hilly route. So, I headed to a neighboring lake that has a running trail around it. The map said that one lap around the lake was 3.7 miles – so I ran it TWICE! The 7.4 miles took me about 1:20, but I felt great when I was finished!

Back in Colorado again, I ran a 4.6 mile route yesterday and plan on running 5-7 miles on Friday! My goal is to run in the morning at least one day a week to get my legs used to the early start on race day. (The half marathon starts at 6:45 am and apparently parking is limited so they are encouraging people to get there by 5 am – not fun!!!) I’m still really excited to see how I’ll do and I know there is ALWAYS room to improve – but you’ve got to start somewhere!

Colorado Colfax Marathon – My First Half Marathon

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

So I officially did it! I signed up for my very first HALF MARATHON – the Colorado Colfax Marathon. Race day is May 16th, 2010…so far away, yet so soon. So, let the training begin.

I found a great novice training schedule through Jeff Galloway. Although I’ll need to tweak it somewhat so that it fits my hectic schedule, I like it because it is a lengthy program - from start to race day is 17 weeks. Some training programs I’ve seen are a bit more strenuous and have the mileage increase over a quicker time period, but this one is perfect for me. I need GRADUAL mileage increases.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to finish the half marathon; however, I do have a few other goals that I’d like to work on, as well. I’d like to run a 5K at a faster pace. I’d also like to run a few other 10K races. I think all can be done while I train for my first half marathon.

Avenue of Cold Facts – a/k/a Colfax – here I come!

A Quick Break

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Just when I had gotten to the point in my workout where I could run for almost three miles without stopping – I took a full week off. We had a full week with out-of-town visitors, visits to the pediatrician, lots of rain, and an attempt at an Independence Day camping trip; but, I didn’t make time to run. Today, the rain finally stopped and the sun came out; so, I decided to take the opportunity to get back on my running schedule. I was shocked how my legs and lungs wanted to revolt against my seven day hiatus. After running and walking intermittingly for a mile and a half, I returned home. I’m sure it’s not the last time I’ll take a break; but, it will be helpful to remember my slow return to running after such a quick break. Better luck tomorrow.

A New Beginning: My First Post

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Hi.  Welcome to my blog about all things related to running, being a mom to two adorable children, and mountains:  Mountain Mama Marathoner.  I decided to create this blog when I was re-inspired to dig out my old running shoes and attempt something new - a marathon.  My marathon training schedule, the highs and lows of running again after a three and a half year hiatus, and juggling my newly-found active lifestyle with two young children, a husband, and a yellow lab will be among some of the common themes of this blog.  Mix in my love of the mountains and you’ll begin to get a picture of what makes me tick.  Stay Tuned!
